Daniel Ortega's administration began attacking the Catholic Church after clerics provided assistance to the demonstrators. Although the Church initially tried to broker a national dialogue between the protesters and the government, the situation began to move in a dangerous direction for Catholics. As a result, since 2018, government entities and citizens sympathetic to the regime have been harassing the clergy, as well as the lay faithful. The situation was exacerbated after the next presidential election. In January 2022. Daniel Ortega was once again sworn in as president of Nicaragua. His wife Rosario Murillo was given the position of vice president. Their political party, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), controls the country's legislative body. Doubts about the legitimacy of the elections have given rise to mass popular protests against Ortega's rule. This has been met with a strong response from the president, who is reaching for various tools to suppress the opposition. The Catholic Church has openly opposed the repression and human rights violations. As a result, religious leaders who speak out critically about the government face increasing threats and police make arbitrary detentions even for preaching on unity or justice.

Escalating persecution of the clergy

In March 2022, Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Waldemar Sommertag was expelled from the country. According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) - the authors of a report on persecution in Nicaragua - this was due to his appeal to the authorities to release political prisoners and improve their detention conditions. Since August 2022, the right to religious freedom has been restricted, for example, processions have been banned. In addition, an official ban on hanging religious symbols in front of homes has been introduced. Political prisoners, meanwhile, are not allowed to possess Bibles or any religious literature, and have been deprived of their right to pastoral care.

In 2022, the Nicaraguan government dramatically stepped up efforts to eliminate all forms of independent civil society in the country, revoking the legal status of 1,545 organizations. Several universities and technical institutes affiliated with both Roman Catholic and Protestant religious groups were also stripped of their legal status in 2022. Lawyers affiliated with the CCA believe the reason was the lack of loyalty of university authorities as well as students to the Ortega government.

In December 2023, Bishop Isidoro del Carmen Mora Ortega was detained and accused of supporting through prayer Bishop Rolando Jose Alvarez Lagos, who was sentenced in February 2023 to 26 years in prison. The latter cleric, according to those in power, was alleged to have supported President Daniel Ortega's opponents by "spreading false news through information and communication technologies." A report titled "Nicaragua: A Persecuted Church?"[12] shows that between 2018 and 2022 there were 529 attacks on the Catholic Church in Nicaragua. According to the report's author, representatives of the clergy face various forms of repression by representatives of President Ortega's administration. The most common are persecution, profanity, destruction, looting, expulsion from the country as well as confiscation of property.

Reactions from the international community

The United States, already after Ortega won the 2021 elections, found them unreliable and, as Ortega's government expanded its repression, imposed further sanctions. Initially targeting the president and his wife alone, the catalog of actors has expanded over time. The European Union, too, in the face of hostile diplomatic acts, has decided to impose sanctions and visa restrictions on representatives of the Nicaraguan administration. The escalation of the situation in Nicaragua led to the establishment of the Group of Experts on Human Rights in Nicaragua at the UN Human Rights Council in 2022[. Both the Latin American Council of Bishops (CELAM) and the bishops of Chile and Spain spoke out against the human rights violations[. In August 2022. The Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the Organization of American States expressed concern about the social and political situation in Nicaragua, calling for dialogue to serve the common good. Those opposing violations of religious freedom rights were joined in February 2023. Commission of the European Union Conference of Bishops (COMECE) calling for the immediate release of Bishop Álvarez, as well as the other falsely accused prisoners.

- The demands of the UN General Assembly do not find understanding from the Israeli authorities.

On December 16, two people were killed by Israeli sniper bullets - a mother and daughter walking out of Gaza's only Catholic church. The two women belonged to the local Christian community and actively participated in the life of the parish. The church also housed Christian families who had taken refuge from the ongoing fighting. According to witnesses, "the soldiers fired in cold blood." Despite the Patriarch of Jerusalem's call, the attacks did not cease. Initially, the Israeli military, justifying the attack, argued that it had received information that "there are rocket launchers in the parish area." However, on December 17, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) denied claims that a Catholic parish in the Gaza Strip was their target. In addition, it stressed that the IDF "does not target civilians, regardless of their religion." In another statement, dated December 19, the IDF released a preliminary report on an exchange of fire with Hamas from near the church, which again stated that the Israeli army was not responsible for the deaths of the two women. The report explained that an exchange of fire between the IDF and Hamas took place in the area indicated: "Hamas terrorists fired a rocket-propelled grenade at IDF soldiers from near the church." As highlighted, IDF soldiers identified three people nearby who acted as Hamas "observers" and "directed their attacks," and "fired at the observers, hitting them."

Increasing casualties among Gaza Christians

The December 16 incident was one of many in which Christians living in the Gaza Strip fell victim. At the same time, the public was informed that an Israeli army missile hit the convent of the Missionary Sisters of Charity in Gaza. The building was severely damaged. According to available information, "54 disabled people were cared for in the convent, which is located in the parish." On the other hand, on October 19, the Israeli army bombed St. Porphyrios Church in Gaza, where some 50 worshippers were sheltered. More than a dozen people were killed as a result of the attack.

Acts of violence by the Israeli army against Christians are on the rise, despite the fact that clerics reported the Holy Family Church in Gaza to the Israeli army as a place of prayer and shelter for civilians at the very beginning of the war. There are currently more than 600 refugees, including children and the elderly, who have found refuge in the parish. Available data shows that since October 7, 2% of the approximately 1,000-strong Christian community living in the Gaza Strip have lost their lives, and the homes of more than 50 families have also been destroyed. In an interview with L'Osservatore Romano, Father Francesco Patton - Custos of the Holy Land - stated that the situation of Christians has always been difficult but with the outbreak of war, "the position of Palestinian Christians is becoming extremely difficult," and he fears that they will disappear completely from the Gaza Strip.

The war against terrorists, and Christians are suffering

The situation for Christians is difficult not only in the Gaza Strip, but also in Israel itself. At present, Christians are a decided minority in the Holy Land. They number about 2% in Israel and about 1.5% in the West Bank. Due to attacks and discrimination, not only by Orthodox Jews, but also by Israeli soldiers, Christians are choosing to leave Israel. The spiral of violence has escalated especially since the beginning of 2023. For example, in January 2023, two Jewish teenagers were arrested for destroying graves in the Protestant cemetery on Mount Zion. Both Armenian community buildings in Jerusalem and Armenian restaurants are being vandalized. Jews also commit destruction of Christ statues and attack Catholic priests and nuns. By the middle of the year, the number of incidents was so high that in July the Polish Foreign Ministry intervened in attacks on pilgrims and members of the convent of the Polish Elizabethan Sisters in Jerusalem. In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung in July, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Pierbattista Pizzaballa said that while aggression by Jews against Christians is nothing new, what is somewhat of a novelty is the frequency with which attacks are occurring. The escalation of aggression was also recognized by the bishops' commission "Iustitia et Pax," which issued a special statement on July 28, 2023. The document stressed that behavior such as "spitting, insults, physical violence, as well as vandalism and graffiti are committed mainly by Jewish extremist youths," and that state authorities continue to allow these "expressions of contempt."

Israeli authorities' position

Israeli authorities officially condemn all attacks on religious minorities. Aggressive behavior against Christians was condemned by Jerusalem Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar, who said in a June 2023 statement that "such behavior is strictly forbidden," as it is against Jewish law. In the same vein was Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, who stressed that city authorities take action as soon as they receive complaints of harassment against Christians. The establishment of a special investigative group in Jerusalem was also announced recently. According to representatives of the Christian minority, however, in most cases the police do not respond adequately to the situation and the vandals even have "tacit" acquiescence from those in power. Religious minority leaders in this context point out that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu only in October 2023 announced a "zero tolerance" policy toward attacks by ultra-Orthodox Jews. Confirmation of the concerns raised may also be provided by the fact that Netanyahu and his cabinet have been called "the most religious and right-wing government in Israel's history," which may, according to commentators, "embolden" radicals.

According to political scientists, particularly noteworthy is the person of Itamar Ben-Gewir of "Jewish Power," who makes no secret of his dislike of Christians. In his law practice, he became famous, among other things, for defending Jewish radicals accused of acts of hatred. Activists, including Elisha Yered, an extremist and former spokesman for far-right parliamentarian Limor Son Har-Melech, fit into this pattern of radical views. Yered has become famous in recent months for a controversial post on the "X" platform, in which he stated that "(...) spitting near priests or churches is an ancient Jewish custom." The anti-Christian attitude is also evident in the increasing restriction of Gaza Christians from entering Bethlehem and Jerusalem.

Summary

In a recent statement to RMF FM radio, Rabbi Shalom Dov Ber Stambler, chairman of Chabad-Lubavitch, convinced Polish listeners that "there is no more humanistic military and no more humanistic politics than Israel's." The events of the past year seem to contradict these claims. The conflict between Israel and Hamas is escalating to the point where its victims are outsiders. The international community also recognizes this. As early as October of this year, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres sounded the alarm that Israel was violating international law in the Gaza Strip. In response, Israeli authorities revoked visas for UN officials. Meanwhile, on December 12, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution (A/ES-10/L.27) calling on Israeli authorities for an "immediate humanitarian ceasefire" and protection of civilians and humanitarian access. In response, the Israeli ambassador called the resolution "hypocritical." Three more resolutions were adopted on December 20, 2023. In total, in 2023. UN General Assembly adopted 23 resolutions, 14 of which dealt directly with Israel. Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch, commented, calling the state of affairs "a 'farce' and discriminatory." In the conclusion of his statement, Neuer accused the UN of bias and of violating the principle of equal treatment of all countries in order to, as he put it, "make Israel a scapegoat." Acts of violence against Christians were also condemned by Pope Francis, who stressed that the targets of Israeli attacks in Gaza are "not terrorists but families, children, sick and disabled people and sisters."

Dr. Kinga Szymanska - analyst at the Ordo Iuris Center for Research and Analysis
      Kategoria }
Adobe Stock

christians

osce

report

church

persecutions

Wed, 29 Nov 2023 10:17:58 +0000 filip.bator 1473 at https://en.ordoiuris.pl Wave of violence against Christians in Poland. The report's authors also took into account a "nativity play" staged at a school in Gdansk. The performance included a scene in which the figure of Jesus was played by a half-naked student sitting in a wheelbarrow.

The institute also noted an attack on a parsonage in Dolice. There, a man vandalized the chancel of the church, as well as the fence, garden and door to the rectory. He also threatened the priests with death. A situation from Zabrze was also described, in which the perpetrator threatened a clergyman with a revolver. In Jaslo, on the other hand, a priest was attacked with a knife in the street.

- The data submitted annually by the Ordo Iuris Institute to the OSCE has remained at a similar level of intensity from year to year. So far, schools have seemed to be a place where teachers maintain standards of religious freedom. This year, however, a case of insulting the Holy Family and ridiculing Christians at a high school in Gdansk was revealed. It came to the point where teenagers acting in a play showed satanic signs to the rhythm of the music, with total approval from the teachers," stressed Magdalena Mickiewicz, coordinator of the Ordo Iuris Center for Religious Freedom.

For several years, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe has been conducting research and analysis on the scale of the phenomenon of hatred against various social groups. Ordo Iuris lawyers have been involved in this process since 2015 by monitoring violations of religious freedom and acts of religiously motivated aggression against Christians in Poland. To this end, the Institute established in 2018. Center for Religious Freedom, which collects cases of violations of religious freedom, insults to religious feelings, insults, harassment, vandalism or other destruction of religious sites or symbols. The Center also undertakes legal interventions to protect the rights of religious believers in situations where there are violations of their freedom to profess their religion and externalize their religion through prayer, participation in religious rites, practice or teaching. The Ordo Iuris Institute also provides legal assistance to victims of religiously motivated hate crimes.

The OSCE report is released every year in mid-November. It collects information on hate crimes. It includes, among others, acts such as threats, property crimes, assaults, murders or any other crime motivated by hatred or prejudice. In addition, it is a prerequisite that the act in question is prohibited by law and constitutes a crime under criminal law according to the national order of the country in question.

- It is important to sensitize society so that all manifestations of aggression motivated by religious hatred are reported. Preserving social peace should also be in the interest of those who do not identify with the Christian faith. A strong response from law enforcement is also necessary," noted attorney Magdalena Mickiewicz.

Cases of crimes motivated by hatred against religious believers can be reported to the Ordo Iuris Center for Religious Freedom. In addition, she emphasized that her intention was to contribute to the public debate on abortion. In 2014, a criminal court in Paris sentenced a woman to sexual exhibitionism, imposing a suspended sentence of one month in prison, 2,000 Euro compensation for the parish of St. Magdalena and 1.5 thousand. euro by way of reimbursement of the costs of the proceedings. In 2017, the appellate court upheld the conviction, and in 2019, the Court of Cassation finally closed the case, rejecting the cassation appeal of the accused. PLN 47 thousand), including 2 thousand. euro as compensation and 7.8 thousand. euro by way of reimbursement of the costs of the proceedings. In the statement of reasons for the judgment, the Court pointed out that the French courts had failed to take sufficient account of the fact that the applicant's indecent behavior "was in fact intended to convey, in a symbolic place of worship, a message about the role of the Catholic Church in the sensitive and controversial issue of women's right to decide your body, including the right to abortion ”. For several decades, the Tribunal has consistently ruled that freedom of speech does not include the right to proclaim the so-called unproductively offensive statements that add nothing to the debate but merely humiliate believers. Recently, however, the Court has started to gradually distance itself from this position, taking into account the complaints of celebrities and activists about the symbolic penalties imposed on them by the domestic courts for insulting the Christian religion. In the light of the latest jurisprudence of the ECtHR, it seems permissible to offend Christians not only in the press, but also in their own places of worship. It remains to be hoped that the French government will exercise the right to appeal against the last ruling to the Grand Chamber of the Tribunal, stressed Weronika Przebierała, Director of the International Law Center of the Ordo Iuris Institute.

The case of Bouton v. the 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund drew the attention of some MEPs who introduced the subject of respect for human rights in China to a debate during a plenary session of the European Parliament. The discussion ended with the adoption of the fifth resolution in two years on the deterioration of the human rights situation in China.

The debate started with the tabling of five motions for resolutions to condemn the unfair repression of Hong Kong's political dissidents and to ask the local government to immediately drop all charges against 90-year-old Cardinal Zen. Some MEPs not only saw Cardinal Zen's arrest as an attack on democracy and the rule of law, but above all on religious freedom, shedding light on the true nature of the communist regime and an attempt by the Chinese authorities to silence the cardinal and the Church with him. "When you want to punish someone, there is always an excuse," Czech MEP Michaela Šojdrová told the EP plenary session.

Deputy Anna Fotyga recalled that: "the arrest and charges against the great authority of the 90-year-old Cardinal Zen shows how brutal this regime can be [...]. We urge the international community to use all possible means to put pressure on China to drop the charges against Cardinal Zen and other Hong Kongers who just want to live in peace. [...] This fact reminds me of the faith and courageous behavior of the Polish Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. This is the fate of spiritual leaders, but we must defend them with all our strength. "

On the other hand, MEP Joachim Kuhs from Germany drew attention to the contradiction according to which: "We condemn China's attitude towards Card. Zen, but Parliament and the Commission must take a clear stance against the persecution of Christians. We use strong words when we talk about abortion, but in China, India, North Korea, and Muslim countries there are Christians who are persecuted and we say nothing. Rather, we have trade agreements with these countries. We need clarity, our silence serves as an encouragement to the mighty of this world to continue their repression. We must act not only to help Cardinal Zen, but millions of citizens to fight for their freedom of religion. "

Ultimately, the adopted resolution called on the Commission and Member States to review the EU-Hong Kong / China Agreement on Cooperation and Mutual Administrative Assistance in Customs Matters, the status of Hong Kong's Economic and Trade Bureau in Brussels, and Hong Kong's place in the World Trade Organization. They also called on the Vatican to strengthen its diplomatic efforts and exert influence over the Chinese authorities.

"Despite the debate occurred within the European Parliament on the arrest of the Cardinal Zen and the ongoing deterioration of human rights in the independent region of Honk Kong has marked a further step towards the realisation that the communist regime – wherever it is established – may change its form, but not its attitude towards Christians who oppose the deprivation of fundamental freedoms, the Resolution adopted last week is not binding among Member States and as such can be reduced to a mere declaration of intent without any practical effect. The risk in this case is that of considering the duty to protect human rights in the international arena fulfilled simply by denouncing political oppression affecting millions of Christian citizens, without then taking effective measures to support them. Taking practical measures against the violation of fundamental rights is even more necessary considering that China is a member of the Human Rights Council. From this perspective, it is therefore necessary to continue monitoring the activities of the European Institutions so that they effectively follow up on the measures proposed in the Resolution and mark a step forward in the defence of freedom of religion and expression," underlined Veronica Turetta, analyst at the Ordo Iuris Center for International Law.

      Kategoria }
Adobe Stock

joseph zen

cardinal

church

hong kong

china

persecutions

European Parliament

resolution

eurpean union

christianity

Tue, 12 Jul 2022 08:40:19 +0000 filip.bator 1321 at https://en.ordoiuris.pl “Brave contribution in the fight against ideology” - The reason was alleged “incitement to hatred” in the article written by the priest and published in “Theologisches.” Father Johannes Stöhr, the magazine’s editor in chief, was sentenced along with him. In his article, Father Oko described the phenomenon of the so-called lavender mafia, acting against minors and using clerics dependent on it. The information in the article included mechanisms which brought Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, later defrocked, to the highest church offices.

Dr Palko emphasised in his review, that the “lavender mafia” is a real phenomenon. “Homosexual priests have been talked and written about for dozens of years. The adjective “lavender” was first used by an American priest and sociologist, Andrew Greney, in 1989, because many of those priests liked perfumes and cosmetics. High Church officials also talked about that problem,” writes Doctor Palko.

The Slovak politician also indicates the problem of paedophilia among many clergymen who engage in the homosexual practices, described by Father Oko. He reminds the report prepared on behalf of United States Episcopal Conference, quoted by the Polish researcher. “According to the document, over of 81% child abuse cases by catholic priests are situations in which the victims were boys,” emphasises Doctor Palko.

The author of the review also writes about the mechanisms of the “lavender mafia’s” development presented by Father Professor Oko. “If homosexual clerics or priests and bishops know of each other’s homosexual inclinations and live according to them, those who are in leadership positions surround themselves with people of similar inclinations and older clerics bring younger colleagues to seminaries,” observes Doctor Palko. “This may lead to the creation of an informal organisation, the members of which, knowing of each other, actually betray their priesthood, helping and protecting each other,” he adds.

Dr Palko also comments Father Oko’s conviction. He underlines that the priest didn’t criticise persons of homosexual inclinations, but those priests who undertook activities contrary to the teachings of the Church and break the law. “The context indicates that Dariusz Oko wrote about a clique of gay priests and bishops who secretly lead promiscuous lives, dramatically contrary to the sense of priestly vocation, who protect and support each other, try to change the teachings of the Church, cause scandals which seriously harm the Church, vilify and degrade the priests who want to expose them, and in particular, commit serious paedophilia and ephebophilic crimes,” the politician underscores.

In conclusion, Doctor Palko emphasises Father Oko’s contribution in the fight against radical ideologies. “LGBT ideology has long ago ceased to be a harmless eccentricity. When it comes to power, it harms the people who do not wish to profess it. In the European Union’s position towards Poland and Hungary, we see that this ideology even aims to punish whole countries. That is why it needs to be confronted. Father Professor Dariusz Oko’s book is a useful, brave contribution in the fight against ideology,” claims the author of the review.

Dr Vladimir Palko is a Slovak politician and mathematician, a former Slovakian internal affairs minister and the president of the Conservative Democrats of Slovakia.
